Lore & Background

Created by writer Chris Claremont and illustrator John Byrne, the Shadow King first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #117 (January 1979) as Amahl Farouk. He claims to be a multiversal manifestation of the dark side of human consciousness, spawned by the first nightmare. In the 1930s, known as Farouk, he worked for Adolf Hitler's agents Wolfgang von Strucker and Geist, planning to use magic to strike down the British royal family. X-Treme X-Men and X-Men: True Friends reveal him as an entity of the astral plane that has existed since humanity's dawn. He acts as a dark force within mutant history, from challenging Karma in a psychic duel during the New Mutants saga to setting traps for Storm during the Muir Island Saga.

In Their Own Story

During the Muir Island saga, the Shadow King resurfaced and issued psychic attacks so intense they manifested as physical damage, breaking Professor X's legs. In X-Men: Worlds Apart, he killed a Wakandan priest in Wakanda and framed Gentle before controlling Black Panther to confront Storm; she revealed Bast had hidden in her mind, eventually devouring his astral form. As Farouk, he joined Daken's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, creating illusions of Professor X and Angel to trap Psylocke. He later showed Evan that his life was a computer-generated illusion and he was a clone of Apocalypse. The Brotherhood planned to compel Evan into Apocalypse armor for the Shadow King to control him, but Psylocke locked Farouk in Omega White's body. Later, telepath Bloody Bess unwittingly released his host; he possessed Pirates except Bess until Nightcrawler and Bess defeated him using a psi-blade.
