Nightcrawler's fictional biography begins with his mother, Mystique (Raven Darkhölme), posing as a human baroness before giving birth to Kurt in Bavaria. When locals discovered the infant's demonic appearance—pointed ears, tail, and extra digits—a mob pursued them; Mystique threw Kurt down a waterfall to escape, where he was retrieved by Azazel under pre-2023 continuity or found by sorceress Margali Szardos shortly after birth. For years, it was believed Kurt was born from an affair between Mystique and the demon-like mutant Azazel. However, the 2023 one-shot X-Men Blue: Origins corrected this history, revealing his biological parents are actually Mystique and her wife, Destiny (Irene Adler). In this updated account, Mystique used her shapeshifting abilities to assume a male form for reproduction, while Destiny carried Kurt to term. Throughout his publication history, Nightcrawler has been a founding member of Excalibur in 1987 and has frequently returned to the X-Men, serving as an emotional and spiritual center for the team.

In Their Own Story

In September 2004, Marvel launched the first ongoing Nightcrawler title written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with art by Darick Robertson, though it was canceled after twelve issues. A more significant return occurred in 2014 when Chris Claremont wrote a new ongoing series following Kurt's resurrection from the 'Second Coming' storyline of 2010. Claremont described Nightcrawler as the team's 'emotional/spiritual center,' focusing on how his death and rebirth affected his Catholic faith. Later, in April 2021, Si Spurrier introduced Way of X, a psychedelic tale exploring despair and violence within Krakoa's mutant population. In this series, Nightcrawler led a team including Dr. Nemesis, Pixie, and Blink to investigate a hidden manipulator with ties to Professor X. The narrative was structured around the Three Laws of Krakoa, using resurrection rituals like the Crucible to question sin, the soul, and life after death.
